Navgrah Shani Mandir
Temple History
The Navgrah Shani Mandir, located at the holy Triveni Sangam in Ujjain, is an ancient shrine dedicated to the nine Vedic planets, with Lord Shani Dev as the primary deity. It holds immense astrological and historical value:
- King Vikramaditya’s Penance: Estimated to be over 2,000 years old, the temple was established by the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya. During his challenging Shani Sade Sati phase, the King performed intense penance at this exact spot. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shani blessed him, prompting the King to build this shrine to help devotees pacify planetary afflictions.
- India’s First Navgrah Shrine: It is widely recognized as the first dedicated Navagraha temple in India, making it a supreme center for planetary remedies (Graha Shanti).
- Unique Shiva-Shani Form: Unlike typical shrines, the nine planets here—including Shani Dev—are uniquely worshipped in the form of Shiva Lingams, symbolizing that all planetary energies are governed by Lord Shiva.
- Historical Restoration: The temple complex and the beautiful stone river steps (ghats) were later restored and expanded in the 18th century by the Maratha Peshwas.
Temple Significance
The Navgrah Shani Mandir in Ujjain is a premier center for planetary remedies (Graha Shanti). Its core significance includes:
- Shani Dosha Relief: It is the ultimate pilgrimage site to pacify the malefic effects of Saturn, such as Shani Sade Sati and Dhaiya.
- Triveni Sangam Power: Located at the holy confluence of three rivers (Shipra, Gandaki, Saraswati), a ritual dip here is believed to amplify the strength of your remedies.
- Shiva-Shani Blessings: Since the planets are worshipped as Shiva Lingams, devotees receive the dual blessings of Lord Shani (the karmic judge) and Lord Shiva (the supreme protector).
- Shani Amavasya Peak: Performing Tel Abhishek (mustard oil offering) here on Saturdays and Shani Amavasya is highly effective for instant planetary relief.
