Vrinda Kund
Temple History
Vrinda Kund is an ancient holy site near Nandgaon that was established 5,000 years ago, hidden during medieval wars, and beautifully restored by ISKCON in 1989.
- Ancient Era: Lord Krishna's great-grandson, King Vajranabh, built the first shrines here and installed a stone Radha-Krishna deity to mark where the holy pastimes happened.
- Medieval Era: In the 16th century, the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan rediscovered the forgotten site, identifying it as the secret grounds where Vrinda Devi planned Radha and Krishna's daily meetings.
- Survival: During medieval temple raids, local villagers buried the heavy stone deity in the fields to protect it. Though partially damaged, that exact ancient deity is still worshipped on-site today.
- Modern Era: After centuries of neglect, ISKCON Vrindavan took over the site in 1989, cleaning the sacred ponds and building the current sandstone temple while keeping the area rustic and electricity-free.
Temple Significance
Vrinda Kund holds supreme spiritual significance as the eternal home of Vrinda Devi, the goddess who completely orchestrates the divine pastimes of Radha and Krishna. It is revered as one of the most confidential and spiritually potent sites in the Vraja region.
The core significance of this sacred spot rests on four key pillars:
- The Director of Pastimes: Vrinda Devi is the cosmic coordinator of Vrindavan. At this exact site, she meets her messengers daily to arrange the flowers, groves, weather, and secret meetings for Radha and Krishna.
- The Sacred Yog Peetha: This site is a powerful Yog Peetha (a cosmic junction point where the spiritual and material realms meet), making it an unparalleled location for deep meditation, prayers, and silent chanting.
- Source of the Tulsi Plant: As Vrinda Devi is the presiding deity of the sacred Tulsi plant, this kund represents the spiritual source of all Tulsi devotion. Praying here is believed to grant a seeker pure divine love (prema-bhakti).
- Pristine, Ancient Energy: Because ISKCON intentionally maintains the site without electricity or commercial elements, Vrinda Kund preserves the rare, untouched, and unpolluted spiritual vibration of ancient Vraja.
